In class we had a discussion about abortion and if it should be legal or not. Personally I think it should be legal but only up to the women.
I think this because women are the ones that are going to be taking care of it and feeling the affects of having a baby for the next 9 months. The men don’t have to worry about anything for those 9 months so the decision should not be up to them.
If the woman decides to keep the baby, the woman and the man should be able to take care of it, or if not they should be able to provide the baby with a loving family by giving the child up for adoption.
I also believe before the woman decides to abort their child they should go through some type of therapy before, just so they realize and know what they are doing. So basically they get some type of good information before they make this big decision in their life.
So to conclude abortions should be legal but only up to women and they must get some type of therapy before they make their decision.

age majority
In class we discussed if our government should lower age majority and I think we should.
I really don’t see a point to age limit for example I don’t see the difference between me being able to vote now or me able to vote a couple years ago. There is only some teenagers that know a lot about Canadian government, personally I don’t know anything about the Canadian government I just found out who our prime minister was last semester. Id rather vote in America because their government is more interesting for me and I know a lot more about the American government than Canadian. Some tweens know more about the Canadian government than teenagers or people that are able to vote.
The age limit for drinking makes no sense to me at all because no matter your age if you really want to drink there is so many ways that you can get that drink with out going to the store. I also don’t see how at 18 I am not major enough to drink but one year later my majority grows so much that I should be allowed to drink. But at 18 I can go to war but am still not allowed to drink or smoke cigarettes.
The only thing that should stay the same for age is crime. Even though if a teen, tween or child commits a crime and some might know what they were doing they should still be committed for the age because they could change by the time they come of age and their record will go away. The only time the crime age should not matter is when the crime is extremely serious.
To conclude I don’t think that age limit is necessary in our country for anything really.

school uniforms
In class we had a discussion about school uniforms. I believe that school uniforms should be mandatory.
I think this because school uniforms are a lot easier than everyday clothes. First of all it will cut down on a lot of lateness or should cut down lateness because in the morning it shouldn’t take students a long time to get ready because they wear the same thing everyday. It cut downs on some gossiping. Students judge other students on their clothes and shoes but if we all wear the same clothes that will be cut down big time.
Yes uniforms maybe a bit expensive but you only have to buy them once every two years or maybe less but I don’t think more it really all depends on when the student reaches their growth spurt. Also it gets our students ready for the working world because when you work at a job as a teenager you cannot wear what ever you want to work, you have to look professional and the same as your workers.
To conclude I think that every school should have uniforms. It will be a lot easier in the morning.

Case Study: Redefining Aging
Questions 1-4
1) According to the article, what attitude shift is occurring with respect to aging?
The attitude shift that is occurring with respect to aging is that we should forget about getting old as a problem. The new attitude is to accept the aging process.
2) Why do some of the experts cited believe this attitude shift is important?
The experts believe this is important because by the time we are 6 years old we develop bad stereotypes about old age. We believe when you get older your memory will fail.
3) What do we stand to lose if we do not change our attitude toward aging?
If we don’t change our attitude we develop age, rage and degrade ourselves.
4) What potential benefits might arise from this attitude shift?
If we forget about old age beliefs and grow and become we will become better people

Case Study- Demographer David Foot on Health Care for the Future
Questions 1-3
1) What impact does David Foot believe the aging baby boom generation will have on health care in communities such as Toronto?
Aging baby boomers will have a huge impact on hospitals. When the aging baby boomers start having health issues, new hospitals will have to be built which means more nurses and doctors because we wont be able to fit all of them in the already established hospitals. The
2) What solutions does he purpose to deal with these issues?
His solution is to combine all the aspects of health care together: doctors, health care workers all under one budget. The health care organization will get a certain amount of money from each person based on age and how sick they are.
3) Do you agree with his predictions and solutions? Explain why or why not?
I think that this could be good and bad in some situation. For example people would have to learn to take care of their bodies a lot better so they would have more money in their pocket. This could be bad because not every one can afford health care or insurance which will make more poor and sick people.

Sick - O
The movie sick-o was a documentary talking about health care. Michael Moore travels to different countries to compare their health care with Americas. In America they don’t have free health care and if you cant not pay for your medicine or surgery, the hospital stops caring for you and kicks you out. Basically if you are poor and sick the chances of you dying are quite high, but if your able to pay for your hospital bill you will get taken care of.
He traveled to France and found out that they have free health care for anything or any type of sickness even received his money back for parking after leaving the hospital. Cuba also has great free health care. Prisoners in Cuba get treated well if they are sick and they have a lot better chance of surviving, no matter if they are poor or rich, than poor Americans that can not even afford a yearly check up.
Personally I don’t think this is well because if you are in some serious need for medication or a check up, but you cant afford it you shouldn’t have to die. Yes I know that when people pay more taxes for free health care, some people hate the fact that they are paying more taxes for some one that is not even working or in their family but what they don’t understand is that anything could happen at anytime. For example if they lost their job and became extremely poor and sick and cant afford check ups they would understand how it feels not to have free health care.
So to conclude I think that every country in the world should have free health care for the better of every society.

teenage drinking
I think that there should be no age for drinking because the age limit doesn’t seem to work anyways. Right now the drinking age is at 19 but there is people in grade 9 or even grade 6 that already drink. Children and teenagers don’t like having to obey rules and the more rules or restrictions you give them the more they are going to want to rebel. So if the government should just make it legal for any age like Cuba or Amsterdam. Amsterdam has legalized marijuana and other drugs and they don’t seem to have a huge drug issue or drinking issue.
If we lower the age limit, to like 15 even, teenagers and preteens will start even younger. If we raise the limit to 21 like in the states, there is going to be more under age drinking because if they are 18 or 19 they would just say “oh am only 2 years away what is the difference going to be between now and later”.
So personally I really don’t see a point of the age limit for drinking because it simply doesn’t work. Cops are just wasting there time trying to find kids underage drinking, when they can be doing something more important.

stereotype presentation
Stereotype: Sociology. a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group. I defined the word stereotype because I noticed that when we were presenting that some people didn’t know what a stereotype was. I think that the presentation went pretty well, I believe that we all stereotype or fall under a stereotype of our own. For example while doing the presentation I found out that I look like a “rapper” or some one that listens to “rap music”. On the other hand if I see someone wearing all black clothes, tight shirt, pants and the shirt has some weird heavy metal band I would think that person is emo (emotional). I don’t think that people mean to stereotype on purpose it just happens. I suppose it is the way society raised us. Stereotype and racism I think goes hand in hand because most people are racist with out even knowing it, people don’t mean to be, its just the way we are.

Low Fertility and Sustainability
I think that having children is a good thing, no matter how many you have as long as you can afford it. i know that if every couple had a lot of kids it could be a bad thing because when they die or get old, the society will need more people to take over there jobs or take care of them. Also if you have too many kids our population will over grow which will cause more pollution, the need for more jobs, food and more. I personally think that even though there’s facts that are trying to help us, by telling us how many kids is best to have for the environment, i say have as many kids as you want as long as you can afford it and take care of your responsibilities. Who is anyone to tell you how to raise your kids or tell you how many you should have, besides everything always works out in the end.

Compensation For African Americans
I do not think that this topic got the full attention it should have got instead it only got half of it. This is because our class is 95% white instead of 2 or 3 people, if we had more African Americans it would have been a stronger discussion. While listening to this discussion I heard Willow make a statement saying how would we find the people that had African American slave history. Well, that actually would not be hard at all because all black people originate from Africa, every single one, and the only reason why we got separated was because of slavery. For example the Islands like Jamaica, Trinidad, St.Johns, St.vincent etc, have lots of slave history because most of the black people living there have white or British last names that they were given during slavery instead of their African names. Than instead of going back to Africa they stay where they are, start a family, continue there family tree, and the more generation (1st generation, 2nd, 3rd etc) the family has they forget more and more of their African history and start becoming more part of their new culture. I also heard someone else comment on what is the big deal of Barack Obama to black people and what is the difference between a black president and a female president. well, there actually is a big difference because when blacks first came to America they were slaves and to go from being slaves to being in charge of a nation is a HUGE step and it also let us know how far we have come, that is the difference. I personally do not care if I get compensation because am not full African and I was not the one that was put through slavery or do I know any of my ancestors or grandmas grandpas etc that were put through slavery. I must say though every time I see something that is made out of 100% cotton I laugh and think to my self that I should get what ever that material is for free. On the other hand if the government wanted to pay for my school fees, or I would not have to pay taxes I would gladly accept.
Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide
I personally think that Euthanasia and assisted Suicide should be a choice just like how I believe they should legalize marijuana because it is all choices. For a person to commit suicide they must be in unbelievable pain, because committing suicide is a big thing, its not something that you can take back. I also think that if someone decided to commit suicide, they should be sentence to at least some type of counseling to make sure they understand EXACTLY what they are about to do, unless obviously if someone is making the decision for them. For example you have a kid that is a vegetable, or your wife was in a serious accident and now is only staying alive by a machine and you decide to pull the plug or inject them with a poison to kill them. Yes some people say that in cases like that the person that is responsible should not make the decision because what if they were in the sick persons position how would they feel. Well, that maybe true but the person taking care of the sick kid or wife must be in pain every time they see them the state they are in, especially if they have memories with them when they weren’t in that state, plus hospital bills, not working enough because you have to take time off work to take care of the sick and many more reasons. To conclude I think that Euthanasia and assisted Suicide should be legalize but serious thought or counseling should be taken before deciding on this decision.
Presentation journal
For the first assignment in our sociology class, the presentation went pretty well. It was a good way to start off the semester for me because i never took sociology last year and i found out who these psychologists are and how they contributed to the world of sociology. My Partner (Johnny Bahdi) and I, did the psychologist Abraham Maslow. He was just a normal person, born June 8th 1970, rasied in brooklyn, was an American Jewish Psycologist, went to highschool, than post secondary school, than became a teacher teaching psyology. He started to beocme famous when he made/introduced his theory of the Hierarchy of needs (aka Maslow's hierarchy's of needs). The Hierarchy of needs is basically a triangle built in five levels, the last levels are more imporant than the ones at the top. The hierarchy involves 5 needs, physiological needs are at the bottom (physiological needs are basic needs such as food, water, warmth, sleep etc), than Saftey needs (security of body, employment, health, family etc) than Love/Belonging needs (friendship, family, sexual intimacy) than Esteem needs (self esteem, confidence, achievement etc) than finally Self-Actualization needs ( morality, creativity, problem sovling, acceptance of facts etc). Before researching Maslow i never actually thought about my needs, wants and how i would order them except making sure i have the basic needs of survival, everything else i thought would just be a want. I did learn something by doing this presentation, so it wasnt i waste of time.

Bonus Assignment
How Do you think you are performing in class?
I think that I am not pulling my own weight thus far. I usually leave my sociology homework until the last day or the last couple hours before it is due. my homework that was due on Monday I started it at 11 pm and rushed, when I could have finished the assignment a week ago, since I had maybe just a few less than two weeks to complete. also instead of reading everyday for 15 minutes I just sat here and listened to my music on my cell phone or talk to people. I only started reading my book this week but I am more than half way done but that also means I could have finished my book two weeks ago and start on my book assignment. I usually start slow until mid terms because I think I can slack off and than I see my mid term and realize that I have to get serious. Or ill start to pick up my work habits at progress reports if I slacked off too much. so I don’t think that I am pulling my weight but when I come back from march break I will start to pull my weight and maybe more and I will put money on that !

Why study how society functions
It is very important to study how society functions because if we do not than our country, or our world will be at great risk and our economy is already in bad conditions. The Inconvenient Truth documentary, this article (A Tale Of Two Farms), and our economy today, also shows us what our world will be like in the future if we do not change.
To begin, Al Gor showed us that if we do not stop polluting, global warming will destroy the planet. He showed us all this by studying previous weather conditions (summer, winter, fall). According to Al Gor's charts our summers are getting hotter, our winters are getting shorter, and the ice in the North Pole is melting drastically. With all the ice melting, our cities that are close to the water will soon be underneath. By studying how our society functions, he also realized that our green house gasses, our plants (ie ones like in Hamilton) and even littering is one of the main reasons of global warming. When our pollution in the air builds up it creates its own atmosphere on top of our earth's atmosphere. It lets the sun's rays heat up the earth but the pollutions atmosphere does not let the rays out. I must say that ever since i saw the documentary of the inconvenient truth, i have notice alot more people caring about the planet. We recycle allot more, we are starting to decompose alot more and started using for natural energy resources (ie solar power, water for electricity etc). If i never saw this documentary, i would never have guessed that our world had this problem, nor would i care, well to be honest i really still don’t care, but i do see why now it is important to study how society functions.
Secondly, the prologue, A Tale of Two Farms, taught me because of our economy, and global warming everyone is suffering. People are losing jobs, farmers are losing harvest because of the weather, and when our suppliers (ie Chinese for there technology) crashes our economy crashes even more. So we should learn to make our own supplies/ resources.
By comparing both of these information’s I came to the conclusion that we should study how society works because history really repeats its self and will continue to repeat its self unless we make a change in the way we live.
